As markets Detach from Reality, Focus on Stocks Producing Real Things

By James Cooper, Monday, 08 December 2025

Cheap resource companies producing real things, that’s what James Cooper detailed at his recent presentation at the Noosa Mining Conference last month.

An Introduction…

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be doing something a little different…

Putting together several interviews with our value-focused investment specialist, Greg Canavan.

I think this is especially timely, given that there’s a lot of overlap between resource markets and investors focused on long-term value opportunities, like Greg.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing our unique insights and expertise; Greg will focus on the fundamental-value aspect, and I will focus on the industry perspective.

I think you’ll find this valuable and insightful.

We’ll discuss markets, why a focus on commodities makes sense for long-term investors, plus specific strategies for targeting resource companies.

But to kick off this special series, I’ve decided to share a presentation I recently gave at the Noosa Mining Conference.

Outlining why I think there’s a strong case to focus on relatively cheap resource companies producing REAL things in a market that’s increasingly detached from reality.

James Cooper

James Cooper has been a working geologist in mines across Australia, Canada, and Africa since the early 2000s. He’s led the operations of tiny explorers through to huge producer outfits. He’s seen booms and busts firsthand and he also understands the cyclical nature of individual commodities. For example, James was right there when Barrick Gold launched an enormous $7.5 billion takeover bid for Equinox. That was the peak of the last cycle.

With his background as a geo and finance professional, he brings a unique insight and experience to Fat Tail Investment Research. He writes the broader resource-focused investing letter Diggers and Drillers and the ultra-speculative explorer-focused trading service Mining: Phase One.
